{"id":2957,"date":"2018-11-19T17:00:23","date_gmt":"2018-11-19T17:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/?p=2957"},"modified":"2021-05-05T11:38:09","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T10:38:09","slug":"there-are-4-ds-in-direction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/there-are-4-ds-in-direction\/","title":{"rendered":"There are 4 Ds in Direction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy working to support Noble Purpose Organisations get their best work done.\u00a0 The collective <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/business_briefing\/2016-june.shtml\"><em>focus<\/em><\/a>\u00a0of a group of people at all levels and in all roles can achieve so much. \u00a0This sense of purpose and priority provides the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/npo-here-we-go-on-the-way-to-the-triple-a\/\">bedrock<\/a> for the attitudes and accountability needed for the best progress in their important work.<\/p>\n<p>However, building this alignment takes time.\u00a0 And it is important to keep re-iterating it once agreed.<\/p>\n<p>An organisation or team on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/frontfootorganisation\/\">\u2018front foot<\/a>\u2019 has the focus that a clear, collective direction provides.<\/p>\n<p>But how to get that?\u00a0 There is an approach to \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/scenario-planning-in-a-box-blog\/\">scenario planning<\/a>\u2019 that I find helpful.\u00a0 This is where the group explores and agrees the <em>preferred<\/em> direction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Getting the team exploring and discussing the 4 Ds of \u2018Direction\u2019 helps:<\/p>\n<p>What is the <strong>Default<\/strong> case.\u00a0 What happens, if nothing happens?\u00a0 What is \u2018inevitable\u2019 with no change to strategy or no improvement to how things are arranged?<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Disaster<\/strong>.\u00a0 How might things go horribly wrong for the overall intention and organisation pursuing it?\u00a0 How close to the default future is this disaster case?<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Dream<\/strong>.\u00a0 What is the best case that can be achieved.\u00a0 Not fantasy planning.\u00a0 But realistic with the best organisation of effort.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Different<\/strong>. Having warmed up with these three, what other ideas are there?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[For a deeper approach it can be worth considering these Ds at three different horizons:<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0business as usual, managing risk and operational excellence over the next few months;<\/p>\n<p>2. innovation and drive for growth over the medium term; and<\/p>\n<p>3. more radical transformation and creating a new future that emerges over the longer term.]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Having had this discussion it becomes easier to talk about:<\/p>\n<p>How to respond to what is <em>driving<\/em> or demanding some change.<\/p>\n<p>What is likely to be the tipping point or moment that <em>defines<\/em> whether a positive or negative outcome occurs.<\/p>\n<p>What to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/what-march-would-dee-have-you-phil-hadridge\/\"><em>decide<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to do now and what to try out or explore some more.<\/p>\n<p>The ways of working, skills, research and influence that will <em>determine<\/em> and be needed to achieve the best impact.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The insights from this process should be shared widely to help others understand the ideas, and as a reminder.\u00a0 A visual summary in the form of a wall poster or table mat or digital file (and used as an ongoing \u2018dialogue map\u2019) can make things clear.\u00a0 Using it participatively promotes the continuing conversation underpinning the timely action needed.\u00a0 Leaders can keep referring to this agreement in the stories the tell and the questions they ask.\u00a0 They ensure it is central to organisational life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With these steps noble purpose groups can start to get and stay on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/front-foot-npos\/\">front foot.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2959\" src=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/hallmarks-FF-team-300x233.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/hallmarks-FF-team-300x233.png 300w, http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/hallmarks-FF-team-768x597.png 768w, http:\/\/www.idenk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/hallmarks-FF-team.png 1002w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I enjoy working to support Noble Purpose Organisations get their best work done.\u00a0 The collective focus\u00a0of a group of people at all levels and in all roles can achieve so much. \u00a0This sense of purpose and priority provides the bedrock for the attitudes and accountability needed for the best progress in their important work.
