It is built on an awareness of the past (shocks, surprises, events) and a view to future times (trends, drivers, uncertainties). It is also, maybe surprisingly to some, about seeing the world today as it is: it is fundamentally about the present (understanding it, acting in it).<\/p>\n<p>I like this quote attributed to Lao Tzu: \u201cIf you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Being a visual person, I sometimes see the past and future as a yin yang symbol\u2013 with the present as where the two meet. But maybe a venn diagram with two circles, where the past and present overlap \u2013 maybe the overlap is bigger than we sometimes imagine. Or a three circle venn like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/search?q=past+present+future+as+venn+diagram&amp;rls=com.microsoft:en-US&amp;oe=utf8&amp;rlz=&amp;redir_esc=&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;hl=en&amp;tbm=isch&amp;source=og&amp;sa=N&amp;tab=wi&amp;ei=Tk84UaLiGMLAPMHZgJgG&amp;biw=1440&amp;bih=731&amp;sei=UE84UdqrNYnYPZf-gYgI#imgrc=ooIkePG8MOtGrM%3A%3B9g95USFVR97o1M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252F25.media.tumblr.com%252Ftumblr_m9f0w0wNdz1qa0uujo1_500.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fvenndiagrams.tumblr.com%252Fpost%252F30664128663%252Filovecharts-when-via-h-k%3B500%3B419 \" rel=\"nofollow\">this one <\/a>\u2013 enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>The key in scenario work, and maybe our individual life, is to find time and ways to<\/p>\n<p>1) Reflect and learn the lessons of history<\/p>\n<p>2) Scan from many points\u00a0of view to spot and learn about the future(s) \u2013 plural as they are unknowable<\/p>\n<p>3) Calmly embrace and live the uncertainty in the present.
